Lawkananda Pagoda

On the far side of Thiripyitsaya village, the road comes to an abrupt end in a grove of trees. There above you, on a little hill overlooking the Ayeyarwady, is the Lawkananda Pagoda. This handsome white stupa, the top portion of which has been recently gilded, was built by King Anawrahta in 1059 and marks the southern boundary of Bagan. It is said to contain a replica of a tooth of Gautama Buddha. Poised high above the Ayeyarwady, it commands excellent views to both the north and south. Below it there used to be an anchorage for large trading vessels, which was used when the water level was too low for them to dock at Bagan proper.
